The positions are part of the ERC project RobSpear "Robust Speech
Encoding in Impaired Hearing" that takes an interdisciplinary approach
(combining computational auditory models with EEG, psychoacoustics and
machine-learning) to study sound processing in listeners with impaired
hearing due to ageing or noise exposure. Both novel diagnostic methods
as well as signal-processing strategies for hearing restoration are the
focus of this project. Patient contact is required. Funding is available
for three years and projects start in the fall of 2016.

The Physiology and Modeling of Auditory Perception Group headed by Prof.
Dr. Sarah Verhulst at Oldenburg University (DE) offers an international
scientific environment as well as access to world-class research

Applicants for the position must hold an academic university degree
(master or equivalent). Candidates should have excellent oral and
written English skills, experience with signal processing and coding
(Matlab, Phython).

Project 1: Model-based hearing diagnostics

The focus is on computational auditory modeling as well as optimizing
(multichannel) EEG and otoacoustic emission methods. Background is a
M.Sc. in neuroscience, or acoustics, physics, electrical engineering,
experimental psychology. Experience with EEG recording (writing
experiment code and analysis) is necessary. Auditory modeling experience
is a plus.

Project 2: Psychoacoustic sound encoding strategies

Experience with conducting psychoacoustic experiments is necessary
(writing experiment code and analysis). Background is a M.Sc. in
neuroscience, or acoustics, physics, electrical engineering,
experimental psychology, audiology.

A 3 year studentship for the academic year commencing September 2016 is
available to study the auditory, speech perceptual and language
abilities of children suspected of having an auditory processing
disorder (APD). The main presenting complaint in APD concerns
difficulties hearing speech in noisy backgrounds without any hearing
loss. APD is, however, poorly understood, and there is much dispute
about it, even to the extent of doubts about its existence as an
independent disorder. Other developmental disorders frequently co-occur
with APD (e.g., language impairment), and may in fact be responsible for
the diagnosis. We hope to improve the diagnosis and treatment of APD by
clarifying its nature and developing appropriate diagnostic tests for
it. The primary supervisor will be Professor Stuart Rosen with mentoring
by Dr Doris Bamiou of the UCL Ear Institute and Great Ormond Street
Hospital for Children.

UCL is one of the world’s leading research universities, with particular
strengths in the study of language, hearing and speech sciences. The
department has access to a wide-range of research facilities, including
anechoic chambers for recording and testing, EEG, eye-tracking and
pupillometry, all with extensive technical support.

We seek a highly motivated, intellectually curious and hard working
person with a good first degree in Experimental Psychology, Cognitive
Neuroscience, Hearing Science, Audiology, Speech & Language Therapy or a
related field. Highly desirable in a successful candidate will be:
experience of working with primary-school aged children; expertise
concerning developmental disorders in children; knowledge and expertise
in statistical analyses; experience in computer programming in any
language. Any offer of a position will be subject to an Enhanced
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

The studentship provides three years full funding for postgraduate
training, covering tuition fees and a maintenance grant starting at £17k
in year 1 (£17.5k Year 2 and £18k in Year 3). Full funding is only

Tasks

  • Exploration of anion doping as a strategy to tune the energy levels in the band structure of complex semiconducting metal oxide photoanodes
  • Investigation of the coupling between metal oxide semiconductors and earth-abundant MnxCoOy electrocatalysts by advanced (photo)electrochemical methods
  • Develop new strategies to optimize the coupling between these catalysts and light absorbing metal oxide photoelectrodes

Requirements

  • Completed master’s degree in chemistry, physical chemistry or materials science
  • Good knowledge on chemical growth processes and in solid state chemistry
  • Familiarity with thin film characterization techniques and electrochemistry
  • Strong motivation in research
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English

What we offer

Fixed term contract for 36 months. The employment contract is based on contracts for the German civil service (TVöD-Bund).

29. Novel Interfaces and Assistive Systems for ALS Patients

Tutors: Dr Leonardo Mattos, Dr Giacinto Barresi

Description: Technology can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of people who happen to have severe motor disabilities, including people with debilitating diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This PhD program will focus on the creation of novel human-computer interaction paradigms and user interfaces to enable people with ALS to realize fundamental activities such as communication, social interaction, environment control, and telepresence robot control. Particular attention will be paid to design and development of multisensory (visual, acoustic, tactile, motor) feedback for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The research will involve close collaboration with partner clinicians and technology end-users, allowing the student to develop expertise both in biomedical engineering (biosensors, actuators, control systems) and human factors.
Requirements: background in biomedical engineering, robotics, computer science or related disciplines; interest in the design, implementation and evaluation of assistive systems. Experience in natural user interfaces, multimodal/multisensory user interfaces, or brain-computer interfaces would be advantageous. The candidate must be fluent in both spoken and written English.

A Research Fellow position is available to work with Dr Karolina Kluk at the University of Manchester, in collaboration with Dr Steven Bell, Professor David Simpson, Dr Tobias Reichenbach, Dr Ben Lineton , Dr Patric Naylor and Dr James Harte. This is an exciting opportunity to work on an EPSRC funded project joint between the Universities of Manchester, Southampton and Imperial College London. The project aims to optimise hearing aid devices for individuals based on the analysis of neurophysiological responses to complex auditory stimuli and especially speech. The project objectives are: 1) Propose, assess, and recommend stimuli to use in assessing hearing performance and access to speech; 2) Propose, assess, and recommend signal processing and analysis methods to extract information on access to speech from Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, using a minimum number of channels necessary; 3) Assess if responses in the EEG to real-world stimuli are sufficiently sensitive and robust (within a reasonable time-duration of tests) to provide the foundation for the development of clinical procedures; 4) Propose, assess, and recommend algorithms to optimize hearing aid fitting based on parameters extracted from EEG stimulus responses; 5) Assess the feasibility of using this approach in infants and other patient groups.
You will be a highly motivated and independent researcher with experience in programming of experiments and analysis of results. With a numerate first degree (or equivalent) covering neuroscience, physical sciences or engineering, you will also have, or expect to obtain, a PhD (or equivalent) in audiology, psycho-acoustics or acoustics. You will also have excellent statistical analysis and academic writing abilities.

A post-doc position is now available at the Human Neuroscience and Visual Cognition Lab at the Department of Psychology, Wright State University. The lab is headed by Dr. Assaf Harel and investigates high-level vision and its neural substrates. We are particularly interested in how visual recognition occurs in real-world settings and adopt a neuroergonomic approach to study the applied aspects of high-level vision. For this purpose, we employ a diversity of cognitive neuroscience methods, including EEG, fMRI, psychophysics, and eye tracking. Research topics include, but are not limited to the following areas: visual expertise, object and scene recognition, categorization and perceptual learning.

The position is fully funded for two years. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Neurobiology, Computer Science, or any other related discipline by the start date of the position. Strong background and familiarity with fMRI or EEG research is required. Experience in computer programming, especially with Matlab is highly encouraged and will be considered a strong advantage.
