ITTO Fellowship Programme

21.1.09 |

http://www.itto.or.jp/live/PageDisplayHandler?pageId=171

ITTO offers fellowships through the Freezailah Fellowship Fund to
promote human resource development and to strengthen professional
expertise in member countries in tropical forestry and related
disciplines. The goal is to promote the sustainable management of
tropical forests, the efficient use and processing of tropical timber,
and better economic information about the international trade in
tropical timber.

As of December 2006, the Programme, which began in 1989, has enabled
more than 900 young and mid-career people from over 40 countries
working for government, research institutions, civil society and the
private sector to pursue their professional development and improve
their career prospects. The total value of fellowships awarded to date
amounts to about US$5.2 million; the Programme supports mainly
short-term activities, such as participation in international
conferences, training courses and study tours, but also helps people
to prepare manuals and monographs and provides small grants for
post-graduate study.

livelihoods of poor people in developing countries.

The application procedure varies depending on the relationship that
the doctoral candidate has with the ETH Zurich.

Criteria for candidates without link to the ETH Zurich

Eligibility

To be admitted to the selection process, the application has to fulfil
the following requirements:

The candidate

* Preference will be given to citizens of least developed
countries and other low-income countries according to the OECD
classification.
* The entrance requirements for doctoral studies at the ETH Zurich
have to be fulfilled.

* The research outline should not exceed 3000 characters (with spaces).
* Relevant own publications or relevant earlier activities by the
candidate should be indicated.

Full proposal

A scholarship of CHF 150'000 can be granted per proposal for a period

following information:

Proposal

Cover page including executive summary
Clearly defined and justified objectives
Problem definition, state of research (own and others) and references
(to be included into appendix)
Project description, hypotheses, innovativeness of the research,
research methodology, and corresponding logical framework matrix.
Description of the institutional framework and partnership, explaining
the contribution of all involved partners (if applicable)
Supervision and backstopping
Work plan with milestones
Critical assessment of chances and risks
Expected results and strategy for their implementation (method or
product to be developed and its relevance to end users)
Detailed budget for each year of the scholarship, differentiating all
funding sources including those of the ETH chair and partner
contributions (financial or in-kind)

Appendix

* Letters of support from all involved partner institutions
* Motivation letter with career intentions of the candidate
* CV of the candidate with references
* List of 5 independent reviewers
* Personal references

Selection procedure and reporting

* The proposals will first be reviewed by independent scientists
of the relevant field and then evaluated by the expanded subcommittee
grants of the North-South Centre as specified in the contract with the
Sawiris Foundation.
* The candidates of all accepted projects will be informed about
the contractual requirements and reporting procedures (technical and
financial).

Summer Studentship at CERN

12.1.09 |

Studentships in Summer (Non Member State Nationals)

A limited number of studentships during the summer period are
available. Full CERN financial support is offered to students in
physics and engineering fields who are nationals of countries that are
not Member States of CERN.
Students will join in the day-to-day work of research teams
participating in experiments at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

The deadline for this application is fixed on 13 February 2009!

La date limite d'envoi des candidatures est fixée au 13 février 2009!

Post-doc positions
in
Quantum Information Processing
with Superconducting Circuits

In Delft we have developed superconducting flux quantum bits. These nanofabricated qubits behave as quantum two-level systems, their coherence time can be microseconds while they can be operated in nanoseconds. Very recently we have developed dispersive readout that allows quantum non-demolition measurement. We also very recently have realized a controlled-NOT gate for two qubits. However, many fundamental questions remain to be answered and many practical aspects need improvement. In the near future we will improve control of the qubits and study entanglement and temporal correlations, back-action of the measurement process, interaction with a harmonic oscillator, the optimal lay-out for a practical multi-qubit quantum information processor. We also want to investigate new designs such as the phase-slip qubit.

Our team at present consists of three senior investigators Hans Mooij, Kees Harmans and Ad Verbruggen (materials aspects), two post-docs and four PhD students. We are part of the Quantum Transport Group where also quantum dot spin qubits and nanowires are investigated. We are members of the FOM concentration group Delft-Leiden on Solid State Quantum Information and the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience. In the EU-supported integrated project EuroSQIP we collaborate intensively with European groups. Within EuroSQIP we have three post-doc positions available.

We are interested in candidates with experience in experimental research on low temperature solid state nanocircuits, quantum optics or trapped atoms/ions, with an interest in nanofabrication. We may consider hiring a theory post-doc with strong interest in experimental manipulation and measurement, for a limited period. The main focus for a new post-doc will be defined in accordance with his/her interest and the needs of the project.

Information is available on the QT website http://kavli.nano.tudelft.nl, from Kees Harmans (c.j.p.m.harmans@tudelft.nl, tel. +31 15 2785195) and from Hans Mooij (j.e.mooij@tudelft.nl, tel. +31 15 2786153).

Applications should be addressed to
