Our new Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship supports overseas students who are funding their own studies at the University of Essex. We are offering a scholarship worth £2,000 if your grades in your first degree are equivalent to a UK first class degree.

This new scholarship scheme is for students seeking to join our University in October 2013. Awards will be made on the basis of grades obtained in your first degree, so all applications for relevant courses will automatically be considered. The scholarship is awarded as a partial tuition fee waiver and is available for students on postgraduate taught courses (excluding MBA).

All our relevant course applications, received by the given deadline, will automatically be considered for this scholarship and a fee discount applied to all who meet our grade requirements.

Eligibility

These scholarships are restricted to applicants who are overseas fee payers and are entirely self-funded. They are not available to students who are fully or partly sponsored.
Students must have been awarded a first degree with a grade equivalent to a UK first class honours bachelor’s degree.
Only one scholarship award can be made per student and the award cannot normally be held in conjunction with other University of Essex scholarships.
These scholarships do not apply to deferred entry. Where a student, to whom a scholarship has been offered, requests deferred entry, the award will be considered again in line with the terms and conditions that apply in the new proposed year of entry.
How do I apply?

These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and all academic applications will automatically be considered.
The University will use official transcripts and certificates, submitted as part of the original application, as evidence of grades achieved and no alternative supporting evidence will be accepted.
Applicants who have firmly accepted an offer of a place by 30 September 2013, and met the academic conditions of entry, will be considered for these scholarships. Applications submitted after that date may be considered depending on availability of funds.
Successful applicants will be informed, in writing, by the end of October 2013 of any award to be offered.
Payment arrangements

These scholarships will only be made available as a partial waiver on the tuition fee that is payable on registration at the University.
These terms and conditions apply to the academic year 2013-14. The University of Essex reserves the right to update these terms and conditions as necessary.

In 2012, University of the West (UWest) established the Lotus Scholarship Program (the Scholarship) , thanks to a large number of generous donations. In the 2012-2013 academic year, a total number of 58 students received at least a combined $500,000 in scholarship awards under the program.

For the 2013-2014 academic year, UWest has successfully raised funds to continue providing the Lotus Scholarships for new students entering the University, as well as for students seeking to renew their scholarship for a second year. New applicants must meet the scholarship eligibility requirements and matriculate into UWest in the 2013-2014 academic year (see last page for students beginning Spring 2013). Returning applicants must meet the Lotus Scholarship guidelines in order to qualify for a second year of the award.

Lotus Gold Scholarship – International ($10,000): For international students

Lotus Gold Scholarship – Fo Guang ($10,000): For Students recommended by the Fo Guang Shan or another organized religious order

UWest anticipates awarding a large number of Lotus Scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year. The Scholarship awards $5,000 or $10,000 annually to each successful applicant to apply toward his or her tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, and other expenses required for attendance at UWest.

Terms of Scholarship:
The Scholarship is initially awarded for one academic year beginning in Fall Semester. Renewal of the Scholarship is possible, but not guaranteed, depending on the student’s performance and funding availability.

The maximum renewable term is three years for four-year undergraduate students, and one to two years for undergraduate transfer students and students entering UWest’s Master’s degree programs.
Scholarship Disbursement:
Disbursement of the Scholarship award will be made in two installments, the first in Fall Semester and the second in Spring Semester. The funds will be applied directly to the student’s account. The Bursar’s Office will issue a stipend check if a student has a credit balance in his or her student account after the add/drop date of each semester.

Eligibility:

The Scholarship is available to new students seeking either Bachelor’s degrees or Master’s degrees at UWest. PhD students, ESL students or students seeking certificates only are not eligible for this Scholarship.
Previous recipients of the Scholarship, who meet the maintaining requirements (see below) are also eligible to reapply.
International students must meet the minimum UWest admission requirements for English proficiency. Conditionally admitted students are not eligible for the Scholarship.
To qualify for the Scholarship a student must be enrolled fulltime at UWest. Fulltime enrollment is defined as registering for, and successfully completing, a minimum of 12 credits each semester (24 credits per academic year) for undergraduates, and 9 credits each semester (18 credits per academic year) for graduate students. Students must be pre-registered at the full-time credit level before the Scholarship funds can be made available to them.

Uphold student social conduct standards (e.g. refrain from drinking, physical abuse, threats of violence, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, harassment, sexual harassment, etc.).
During the first two weeks of the Spring Semester, recipients of the Scholarship will be reviewed for eligibility based on the above-mentioned requirements. Recipients may be disqualified for the Scholarship if one or more of these requirements are not met.

Other Important Terms & Conditions:

The Scholarship is non-transferable.
The Scholarship cannot be deferred. If recipients decide to postpone their matriculation into a program until the Spring Semester, they will only receive half of the awarded Scholarship (e.g. a recipient of a $5,000 Scholarship will only receive $2,500 for the Spring Semester). If recipients postpone their entrance into a program by more than one semester, they will forfeit their Scholarship. New students who only enroll in the Fall Semester but not in the following Spring Semester will lose the second half of their Scholarship.(Note: Exception to this policy due to visa or medical reasons will be made on a case by case basis. Students applying for this exception must present relevant documentation.)
This Scholarship cannot be awarded in conjunction with President’s Fellowship, Dean’s Fellowship, Campus Life Fellowship, Buddha’s Light Fellowship, IBEF Scholarship, IBEF Fellowship or UWest Scholarship. Students must return the Scholarship funds if other scholarship money is received.
Recipients may become disqualified after the Scholarship is disbursed if their enrollment status changes during the term of the award, in which case students must return the Scholarship funds received. (Note: Exception to this policy due to medical, family or other extenuating reasons will be made on a case by case basis. Students applying for this exception must present relevant documentation.)
Should the Scholarship be declined or returned, it will be considered forfeited and UWest may keep the award or award it to another student.
Each recipient of the Scholarship will be paired with one of the Scholarship donors, and is required to write a “thank you” letter to the donor, outlining how the scholarship is furthering his or her education and goals in life.
