The
Biomedical Robotics Lab at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT,
Genoa, Italy) is seeking to appoint an outstanding and highly-motivated
PhD student for open position related to assistive robotic systems. The
position is fully funded, starts in November 2016 and typically lasts 3
years.

29. Novel Interfaces and Assistive Systems for ALS Patients
Tutors: Dr Leonardo Mattos, Dr Giacinto Barresi
Description:
Technology can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of
people who happen to have severe motor disabilities, including people
with debilitating diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
This PhD program will focus on the creation of novel human-computer
interaction paradigms and user interfaces to enable people with ALS to
realize fundamental activities such as communication, social
interaction, environment control, and telepresence robot control.
Particular attention will be paid to design and development of
multisensory (visual, acoustic, tactile, motor) feedback for
brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The research will involve close
collaboration with partner clinicians and technology end-users, allowing
the student to develop expertise both in biomedical engineering
(biosensors, actuators, control systems) and human factors.
Requirements:
background in biomedical engineering, robotics, computer science or
related disciplines; interest in the design, implementation and
evaluation of assistive systems. Experience in natural user interfaces,
multimodal/multisensory user interfaces, or brain-computer interfaces
would be advantageous. The candidate must be fluent in both spoken and
written English.
