The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists

|

The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists accepts applications from journalists of the developing nations of Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean to cover the United Nations General Assembly beginning in September each year. Following extensive review of the applications the Fund board of directors selects four recipients each year.

The fellowships offer a unique opportunity for promising young journalists from developing countries to see the United Nations at work and to report on its proceedings for news media in their home countries. Over the past five decades, fellowships have been awarded to hundreds of journalists from the developing world. These awards require the presence of the selected journalist in New York during the first few months of the General Assembly session and should be regarded as an opportunity for news organizations and journalists to provide their audiences with special assignment news coverage from U.N. headquarters.

Successful applicants must obtain a leave of absence from their employers. By endorsing the application of a staff journalist for a fellowship, the editor undertakes to meet all telephone or other transmission charges and to publish or broadcast copy filed by the reporter. Applicants must be full-time, professional journalists between 25 and 35 years old, be employed by a recognized print, radio, television, or internet media organization, and have a good working knowledge of English.

Beasiswa PhD Scholarships in Denmark

|

A number of fully funded Ph.D. positions are available at the Center for Data-intensive Systems (Daisy),
Department of Computer Science, Aalborg University (AAU), Denmark.
The positions are available from August 1, 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The positions are related to the TotalFlex smart grid project sponsored by Energinet.dk
The aim of the project is to develop IT technologies that help accomodate larger fractions of renewable energy into the
energy production by building an integrated solution for managing flexible energy consumption,
so-called "demand response."
The vision of TotalFlex is to develop a cost-effective, market-based system that utilizes total
flexibility in energy demand and production, taking balance and grid constraints into account.
The approach is based on the flex-offer concept pioneered by the EU FP7 project Mirabel http://www.mirabel-project.eu
Flex-offers express an intent to use energy in a flexible way, e.g., for operating a dishwasher, a consumer
could issue the flex-offer "I need 1KWh over 1.5 hours between 10PM and 7AM and I will pay
0.30DKK/KWh for it."

Applications are invited on the following research topics:

A) Flexibility detection and prediction: It is possible to automatically and precisely
detect and predict energy consumption, production, and flexibility at the device level and use
the predictions to automatically generate (potential) flex-offers. This can be realized by applying
data mining and machine learning techniques to the data, coupled with taking the concrete use
context and the historical behaviour of the users into account. The prediction of flexibilities is an
interesting general research problem.

B) Data aggregation and analysis: It is possible to efficiently aggregate
and analyse large amounts of complex energy-related data such as flex-offers over multiple
domain-related perspectives (dimensions) to benefit all energy market actors simultaneously.
This can be realized by building a multidimensional data warehouse for capturing and querying
the data and developing new techniques for aggregating over complex dimensions structures. In
particular, aggregating over complex spatial structures with associated physical constraints
(network grid) is an interesting research challenge.

Applicants must have a master degree in computer science or a closely related field, with very good grades.
They are expected to have good knowledge of databases (preferably multidimensional databases), data warehousing, and/or data mining,
as well as strong implementation skills. Good communication skills in English, oral as well as written, are essential.

Swiss Government Scholarships 2012

14.3.12 |

  1. Types of scholarship:University scholarships: University scholarships are open to students from all countries mentioned in the list, but are intended exclusively for postgraduate studies at one of Switzerland’s 10 universities or 2 federal institutes of technology.
  2. Eligibility
    • Candidates must hold a university degree (Bachelors/Masters) on commencement of the scholarship.
    • Candidates must be able to demonstrate their academic abilities and what they aim to achieve.
    • Candidates must contact the institution and/or the professor supervising their period of research. Universities may request supplementary information and/or set certain additional conditions to determine whether or not you qualify for admission.
    • Candidates must be under the age of 35 (born on or after 1.1.1977).
    • Candidates must be suitably proficient in the language of instruction (French, German, Italian or English). A language test is required.
    • Candidates who have already embarked on the first year of a Masters programme at a Swiss university or UAS are no longer eligible for a Swiss government scholarship (with the exception of arts scholarship holders who do not have to be in Switzerland for more than one year). Such applications will not be considered by Swiss diplomatic representations.
    • Swiss government scholarships may not be combined with other scholarships or awards.
  3. Length and amountScholarships are provided for a nine-month academic year. Scholarships for postgraduate or Masters programs lasting up to 2 years (3 or 4 semesters) may be extended depending on results from the first year.Scholarships consist of monthly payments of:
    CHF 1920.- for postgraduate students
CHF 1920.- for fine arts and music students

The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students does not cover the cost of academic and/or term fees. Generally-speaking, the universities and the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology exempt holders of Swiss government scholarships from term fees (~CHF 600 per term), but not necessarily from Masters programme enrolment fees. In the event that these fees are not waived, it is up to the scholarship holder to arrange payment.

  4. AwardsTechnically, the scholarships are offered to the government of the student’s country of origin and not to the student. Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The Swiss diplomatic representation then passes on the short-listed applications to the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) which subsequently takes the final decision. The FCS is composed of academic staff drawn from Swiss universities. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of academic and scientific excellence. The results will be communicated at the end of April 2012 / Mai 2012.
  5. Application procedure
    1. If you fulfil the eligibility requirements contact the Swiss diplomatic representation in your country of origin or the national authority in charge of scholarships.
    2. The diplomatic representation will provide you with all the necessary information regarding the procedure including application forms and a list of required documentation.

London School of Commerce (LSC) Scholarships 2012

|

London School of Commerce (LSC) is the associate college of Cardiff Metropolitan University (CMU), a British reputable university providing internationally recognised degrees. As the associate college of the university, all degrees from LSC are awarded by CMU. LSC is fully accredited by the ASIC (Accreditation Service for International Colleges) and is a member of Education United Kingdom as well as one of the very first institutions in the UK to receive the UK Border Tier 4 status as ‘Highly Trusted’. LSC has approximately 7,000 students from 130 countries.

LSC has a mission of providing cost-effective education by giving a high quality standard of teaching from an internationally recognised university in the UK without the need to spend a large amount of money and time. At the moment, LSC is offering partial scholarships to 20 Indonesian nationals per intake. The enrolment at LSC group’s global campuses is conducted 3 times a year, giving the students flexibility of joining the programmes at the most convenient time.

There are many benefits of studying in LSC, all the lecturers are highly qualified and many of them are the authors of the textbooks and journals that will be used in the students’ study. Moreover, not only the students’ English language capability will increase, but also gives opportunities to interact with other international students to enlarge the students’ network.

The partial scholarship program is open to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate studies. The scholarship offers an up to 45% cut of the tuition fee and does not include the living cost as well as other expenses.

PT Multi Energi Selaras is the representative of London School of Commerce in Indonesia to recruit and help students to successfully further their studies in all LSC’s campuses globally. As the representative, we do not charge any consultation fee or any kind of fee regarding the students’ application to university.

Undergraduate Courses

BA (Hons) Business Studies
The BA (Hons) Business Studies Programme is designed to prepare students for entry level employment and future managerial positions in a variety of commercial, industrial and service organisations.

BSc (Hons) Computing
This undergraduate programme will introduce you to various areas of computer applications including latest developments in the Information Technology industry. Increasingly, employers see a computing qualification as a sign of a well-rounded ?academic background. ?Fast growing computing technology and information systems have become critical components of almost every enterprise. Companies want to recruit expert professionals who can apply computer science principles, whilst simultaneously demonstrating business knowledge and application proficiency. The principle aim of the programme is therefore to endow you with the knowledge, skills and potential to embark on a career involving computer applications in the international environment.

BSc (Hons) Accounting (conducted at LSC’s division of SBL)
Professionals with degrees in Accounting are?in greater demand than ever, as companies of?all sizes are scrutinised by a larger number of stakeholders. The competitive pressures and new markets in the global economy require expertise in traditional accounting as well as the knowledge and foresight to help companies adapt to change and capitalise on opportunities. ?Medium forecasts through the next decade indicate that this demand for accountants will continue to grow faster than the national average for most other occupations. Greater regulatory pressure and substantial fluctuations in the economy will help create steady demand for those with extensive accounting training from accredited programmes.

The partial scholarship recipient will be given a 45% cut of the tuition fee. Thus the whole tuition fee will only be £6,950 for the whole 2 years duration of accelerated undergraduate studies.

Degree Foundation: £1,000 for students who do not meet the general requirement of direct entry to Undergraduate programme.

Other benefit is, for students who are under 18 years old or have not finished their final year studies, they can enrol to the Academic English and Degree Foundation studies at LSC’s Malaysian campus – Westminster International College, located in

Subang Jaya, Malaysia, which has already been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia as well as accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.

Partial scholarship recipients can further their studies to postgraduate level at LSC and receive additional scholarship toward their Master programme. The tuition fee for one year Master Programme will then only cost 2,950 Pounds. (Price subject to terms and conditions,m and school’s policy at times of application)

Postgraduate Studies
LSC has many Master’s degree programmes in the field of Business, Finance and Information Technology. The postgraduate scholarship deducts 45% of the tuition fee.

Thus the fees payable to the universities are:

MBA (Master of Business Administration) – is £3,950 (12 months) and is £4,450 (16 months)
The MBA programme is the biggest in Europe. LSC’s MBA programme has 4 specialisations in the field of General Management, Finance, International Business and Marketing thus giving students the opportunity to explore their interest.

Disclaimer

The student is responsible for submitting a complete application, according to the steps described under 1-5 by 1 April 2012. Leiden University cannot be held responsible for late and/or incomplete applications.
Please note

Students should be aware that this is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely. One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €10,000 to €15,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.
