Beasiswa Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme (LExS)

For Whom

  1. Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master's degree programme starting September 2013 or February 2014 ( All MA, MSc and LL.M programmes as mentioned on the website Master's programmes in Leiden,  a number of programs have a start date in September only).
  2. All nationalities enrolling in the following programmes starting September 2013 or February 2014 or (programs listed below have a September start date only, with the exception of Adv. Studies in Air & Space Law):  
    • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in Air and Space Law
    • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in European and International Business Law 
    • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in International Tax Law 
    • Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in Public International Law 
    • MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy

Additional Requirements

 
  1. In his or her prior academic education abroad, the applicant must have achieved excellent study results which are relevant for the programme for which the student wishes to enroll. As an indication, the student will be among the top 10% for the relevant programme followed abroad
  2. The applicant will hold a non-EU/EEA passport and will not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans ("Studiefinanciering"; more information)
  3. Scholarships will not be awarded to applicants who have already obtained a Leiden University master’s degree
  4. Students who are granted a Leiden Excellence Scholarship must comply with and confirm in writing their agreement with the http://live.leiden.edu/images/default/file_pdf.png); background-color: transparent; background-position: 0px 1px; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat;">terms and conditions (pdf) attached to the scholarship prior to the granting of the scholarship.
 

Scholarship Amount

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has 5 awards:  
Platinum Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee* and an allowance of €10,000 for living costs
Gold Covers the tuition fee minus the home fee*
Silver Covers 75% of the tuition fee
Bronze Covers 50% of the tuition fee
Ivory Covers 25 % of the tuition fee

The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each Faculty department. The type of award has no reflection on the students' academic level of excellence.
* The tuition fee will be reduced to the amount of the home fee. Students who have been awarded a Platinum or Gold award still have to pay the home fee themselves.

2A All LExS applicants will be informed by the scholarship department of Student Educational Affairs.
Early May 2013 for September 2013 intake.
 
Mid November 2013 for the February 2014 intake.
 

Letter of Motivation

To apply for the scholarship, you should write a letter of motivation (in Word) of a maximum of 500 words, in which you indicate why you believe you should be considered for this scholarship. The Word document should then be attached on thescholarship page in your online application for the master's programmes for which you are applying.

It is possible to submit applications for more scholarship programmes simultaneously. However, it is not possible to obtain more than 1 scholarship from Leiden University for the same study programme. (

Selection Process

The Faculty selection committee will review the applications. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit.

Please note

Students should be aware that the LExS is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely.

One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €10,000 to €14,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

Maximum of 48 months for a full PhD study at Leiden University.

Scholarship Amount


  • Living allowance:
1100 euro monthly
  • Insurance:
800 euro annually
  • Book allowance:
500 euro annually
  • Settling in allowance:
1000 euro (one time only)
  • International travel cost:
1 international return ticket
  • Writing dissertation allowance:
500 euro (one time only)
  • Special program allowance:
500 Euro (one time only)
  • Fees of 10,000 euro per year, as charged by Leiden University

Requirements


  • the applicant is currently a (candidate) lecturer of an Indonesian state or private university; Lecturers from private universities need an endorsement letter from KOPERTIS; Lecturers from Islamic universities under the authority of the ministry of Religious Affairs are not eligible.
  • the applicant has received a valid unconditional Letter of Acceptance from Leiden University
  • the applicant holds a master degree (or equivalent)
  • the applicant should not be more than 50 years old at the time when they register their application
  • the applicants who are couples (husband and wife) and working in the same scientific field are not allowed to apply to the same university and / or guided by the same promotor/advisor
  • have sufficient proficiency in English: DIKTI requires an IELTS score of at least 6.0 (TOEFL 570 paper-based / 230 computer-based) or equivalent. Most faculties of Leiden University will demand higher IELTS scores. Please contact the for the language requirements.

Find a supervisor
A PhD at Leiden consists of independent and original research under the supervision of a professor. ou can contact a professor yourself to discuss your research plan or you can contact the Graduate School of the Faculty.

Applicants for the Faculty of Humanities will need to send in their CV, research proposal (max 5 pages) and research plan (max 2 pages) to this email address before 8 January 2013 and preferably need to be available for interviews in Yogyakarta and Jakarta between 21-27 January 2013

2.
Apply to the Graduate School 

After you and the proposed supervisor agree on your research proposal and research plan, apply to the Graduate School of the Faculty where you plan to conduct your PhD research.


Take into account that the application process might take 4 to 6 weeks!

If you are admitted, you will receive an unconditional Letter of Admission from the Graduate School

Apply for the DIKTI-LU scholarship at Leiden University

Send essential documents to Scholarships@sea.leidenuniv.nl

  • Your Letter of Admission to the Graduate School
  • A research proposal (maximum 5 pages) and a detailed research plan for the 4 years of research (maximum 2 pages)
  • A CV which should include academic achievements and language proficiency of the nominated candidate
Before 10 March
4.
Based on the received applications, Leiden University will create a list of nominated candidates and communicate this to DIKTI. The candidates nominated by Leiden University will receive a financial guarantee statement, required for the application to DIKTI.

20 March
5.
Application for the DIKTI-LU scholarship at DIKTI
Candidates will have to log-in to Dikti’s website to register and get registration number and download a Form A DIKTI-Neso Scholarship

Candidates will submit the following documents to DIKTI:
  • Form A DIKTI-Neso Scholarship
  • 3 recommendation letters from Indonesian Professors
  • Endorsement Letter from the Rector of the candidate’s university;
  • Endorsement Letter from KOPERTIS, for lecturers from private universities
  • Prove of being a permanent lecturer, e.g. Appointment Letter by the Minister of National Education, or Contract
  • Or being a prospective lecturer in one of the following fields of study: Agriculture, Engineering, Medical and Nursing Sciences, Science Education, Art and Culture, Sport Science, Disaster Management, Vocational Education and Early Childhood Education, Management of Higher Education, Regional and International Languages.
  • Copy of legalised diploma and transcript from bachelor and masters degrees.
  • Proof of Language proficiency (IELTS is 6.0 or higher)
