http://www.itto.or.jp/live/PageDisplayHandler?pageId=171

ITTO offers fellowships through the Freezailah Fellowship Fund to
promote human resource development and to strengthen professional
expertise in member countries in tropical forestry and related
disciplines. The goal is to promote the sustainable management of
tropical forests, the efficient use and processing of tropical timber,
and better economic information about the international trade in
tropical timber.

As of December 2006, the Programme, which began in 1989, has enabled
more than 900 young and mid-career people from over 40 countries
working for government, research institutions, civil society and the
private sector to pursue their professional development and improve
their career prospects. The total value of fellowships awarded to date
amounts to about US$5.2 million; the Programme supports mainly
short-term activities, such as participation in international
conferences, training courses and study tours, but also helps people
to prepare manuals and monographs and provides small grants for
post-graduate study.

Post-doc positions
in
Quantum Information Processing
with Superconducting Circuits

In Delft we have developed superconducting flux quantum bits. These nanofabricated qubits behave as quantum two-level systems, their coherence time can be microseconds while they can be operated in nanoseconds. Very recently we have developed dispersive readout that allows quantum non-demolition measurement. We also very recently have realized a controlled-NOT gate for two qubits. However, many fundamental questions remain to be answered and many practical aspects need improvement. In the near future we will improve control of the qubits and study entanglement and temporal correlations, back-action of the measurement process, interaction with a harmonic oscillator, the optimal lay-out for a practical multi-qubit quantum information processor. We also want to investigate new designs such as the phase-slip qubit.

Our team at present consists of three senior investigators Hans Mooij, Kees Harmans and Ad Verbruggen (materials aspects), two post-docs and four PhD students. We are part of the Quantum Transport Group where also quantum dot spin qubits and nanowires are investigated. We are members of the FOM concentration group Delft-Leiden on Solid State Quantum Information and the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience. In the EU-supported integrated project EuroSQIP we collaborate intensively with European groups. Within EuroSQIP we have three post-doc positions available.

We are interested in candidates with experience in experimental research on low temperature solid state nanocircuits, quantum optics or trapped atoms/ions, with an interest in nanofabrication. We may consider hiring a theory post-doc with strong interest in experimental manipulation and measurement, for a limited period. The main focus for a new post-doc will be defined in accordance with his/her interest and the needs of the project.

Information is available on the QT website http://kavli.nano.tudelft.nl, from Kees Harmans (c.j.p.m.harmans@tudelft.nl, tel. +31 15 2785195) and from Hans Mooij (j.e.mooij@tudelft.nl, tel. +31 15 2786153).

Two Year Postgraduate Scholarship in Emotionally Intelligent ICTs for Social Innovation

Two Year Postgraduate Scholarship in Emotionally Intelligent ICTs for Social
Innovation

School of Business
La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia

As part of an Open Innovation Research Program with global electronics
corporation NEC Japan, Masters by Research scholarships are available for
deserving candidates.

* Background*

Sensemaking is an emerging paradigm for understanding social dynamics in
organisations. It postulates that the process of translating the personal
interpretation, knowledge or meaning into a specific behaviour, decision or
action is moderated by interaction of an individual's rational with their
affective characteristics. It proposes to significantly alter the analysis
and interpretation of data about people, internet users and employees in an
organisation. In general, emotional systems in humans influence many
cognitive processes including decision making, focus and attention, goal
generation and categorization, all of which are important for design of
human-centred intelligent systems.

In this context, ICTs which form an integral part of organisations can be
used as effective tools for social innovation. It is envisaged that
emotionally
intelligent ICTs would play a pivotal role in design of sustainable
organisations in the 21st century by improving the quality of life at work
(e.g., through design of emotionally cohesive and culturally fit teams)
and at home, by provision of emotionally intelligent health care and health
promotion systems (especially for the elderly) to help control spiraling
health care costs, and by facilitating travel and e-tourism through
emotionally intelligent e-tourism systems.

The postgraduate students will be expected to work on the following research
projects

1. Human-centred intelligent system for constructing emotionally cohesive
and culturally fit teams.
2. Emotionally intelligent persuasive dialog system for health promotion.

3. Emotionally intelligent health care (nurse) robot for pre and
post-operative care.
4. Emotionally Intelligent e-tourism system for holiday destination
planning and sight seeing.

The postgraduate students will be supervised by a research team consisting
of researchers from La Trobe university and NEC Corp., Japan. The research
team is headed by La Trobe's Associate Prof. Rajiv Khosla. An annual stipend
of up to AUD 25,000 per annum for 2 years is available from Jan 2009 for
deserving candidates. The annual stipend includes a research internship for
6 months each year (i.e., in 2009 and 2010) at NEC's technologically
advanced research lab in Japan.

*Eligibility Requirements:*

The prospective candidate must have completed a four-year undergraduate
degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or equivalent with an
average of 80% or above. Interested candidates can contact Associate
Prof. Rajiv Khosla (r.khosla@latrobe.edu.au ) directly with your CV,
academic transcripts, .and relevant R&D experience. The candidates must also
include a covering letter with a brief description outlining the research
project they are interested in and relevant skills for the project.

Knowledge in areas like emotional intelligence, natural language processing,
affective computing and human-centred e-tourism would be a benefit.
