pertaining to trade in hazardous wastes and endangered species.

Position / Profile: We are looking for two PhD students with a strong
interest in analyzing global environmental issues from a political
economy perspective. We expect you to hold an MA/MSc in political
science and/or economics, to have strong methodological skills, a keen
interest in questions of political economy, a good knowledge of
political science and political economy theories, and a strong command
of English. Expertise in formal modelling (game theory) is not
necessary, but will have to be acquired during the first year.

Terms of employment: We offer the successful candidates an
intellectually challenging position in one of the leading political
science research centers in Europe and the prospects of obtaining a
PhD from ETH Zürich (http://www.ib.ethz.ch/phd/index). Your employment
and workplace will be in the International Political Economy research
group at the CIS, which is led by Prof. Thomas Bernauer
(http://www.ib.ethz.ch). The salary will be according to the pay scale
of the Swiss National Science Foundation (ca. CHF 3’000.- /month,
which is sufficient to support a modest one person household in
Zürich). The employment is for four years. Applications: Applications
should include a letter of motivation, a detailed curriculum vitae,
two letters of recommendation, copies of all academic
degrees, the MA/MSc thesis or two recent seminar papers. Please submit

Survey of financial aid / scholarships for foreign undergrads in 2006

|

Please take a look at the following very interesting compilation of financial aid for international students attending US universities from 2006:

http://www.oacac.com/docs/IntlFinAid.xls
http://www.oacac.com/docs/IntFinAid.pdf

I would like to point out again my frequent claim that many of the top-tier schools in the US are very aggressive and generous with financial aid (at least prior to the economic downturn).

Here is a snapshot of the top-ranked places:

MIT, int'l students: 305, w/aid: 261, avg award: US$ 33,057.
Harvard, int'l students: 585, w/aid: 437, avg award: US$ 36,705.
Yale, int'l students: 452, w/aid: 237, avg award: US$ 29,843.

And as usual, please keep the discussion related to beasiswa on this mailing list and don't email me personally.

Julius

2 PhD Scholarships at the Integrative Innovation Unit, Department of Marketing and Management

Job description:

Two PhD Scholarships within the Integrative Innovation Management unit are vacant from 1 June 2009 or soon after for a period of three years. Integrative Innovation Management is a cross-disciplinary research group that bridges two faculties: Social Sciences and Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark. These positions are anchored at the Department of Marketing & Management in Odense and require enrolment in the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Applications are invited from candidates with a Master's Degree.

The vision for Integrative Innovation Management is to integrate the partial approaches to innovation management by developing new methods and producing scientific insights into the innovation process by applying a theory-driven approach to support empirical results. The approach is founded on engineering perspectives combined with marketing and management aspects.

To exemplify, the group is developing research projects within the field of sustainability and innovation and open innovation. One proposal could be to develop a framework for supporting integrative and methodical product development in the renewable energy sector. Another proposal could be to study open innovation practices, in particular emphasising value co-creation among interrelated actors utilising network and learning theories. However, these suggestions are only indicative of possible PhD proposals.

We therefore invite project proposals within the broad field of integrative innovation management. Especially, we encourage project descriptions from the perspectives of marketing and management as well as integration with engineering aspects on integrative innovation management. The research unit welcomes applicants with background within engineering, business economics (especially marketing and management) and economics.

As part of the PhD programme, an individual education programme within the field of business administration has to be completed. You will be expected to complete a six-month stay at a research institution abroad and, over the period of the programme, to acquire experience of teaching or other types of presentation. You are also expected to participate in the various activities within the research units and – apart from your stay abroad – to be routinely present at the unit.

Further information can be obtained from the director of the research group Integrative Innovation Management: Professor Mette Præst Knudsen, tel. +45 6550 7455 or mpk@sam.sdu.dk.

Information about the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, can be found at the homepage

The application should include a detailed description of the PhD project. Besides a general problem formulation it should discuss relevant theory, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description must not exceed 8 pages.

Research Fellowships for 2009-10

· Social and Cultural Change in Muslim Contexts
· Knowledge Construction in Fields Related to Understanding Cultures

Programme Description

The research fellowship programme at AKU-ISMC commences in September and offers a unique opportunity to pursue research within an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment. Fellows play an active role in the intellectual life of the Institute, participating in a wide range of seminars, workshops, and conferences. They also enjoy the opportunity of interacting with distinguished faculty at the Institute and from other academic institutions in the United Kingdom. The duration of each fellowship is one year. During this time, candidates explore and shed new light on a specific dimension of one of the Institute’s two major research themes: social and cultural change in Muslim contexts or knowledge construction in the fields related to understanding cultures. These two themes are deliberately open ended and broad in their scope to enable a diverse range of research topics. One example of a research topic that has been derived from the first theme as an area of specific interest at the Institute is the idea of cities as environments for social and cultural change.

The present cohort of fellows (2008/2009) is working on various aspects of social change by examining the dynamics of networks and institutions in Muslim contexts. During the course of this academic year, the Institute will facilitate scholarly dialogue among the research fellows and senior academics who have contributed to the discourse related to civil society and social change within Muslim contexts.

The fellows are expected to produce a research paper on the theme of their fellowship topic, to a standard that is publishable by a quality academic journal, and that can be published in the Institute’s academic publications series. During the course of their fellowship they are required to participate in the educational programmes of the Institute by delivering lectures and seminars as required. Fellows will also contribute to the Institute’s various seminar and discussion series by giving lectures and presenting papers to faculty, students and staff.

Research fellows are also expected to contribute the Muslim Civilisations Abstracts (http://www.aku.edu/ismc/abp.shtml) project by writing abstracts and editing papers.

Requirements:

Candidates should have
- A PhD in the Humanities or Social Sciences;
- A high degree of interest and competence in one of the above research areas;
- A high level of proficiency in communication skills, written and verbal;
- An International English Language Testing System (ELTS) score of at least 6.5 or equivalent is essential.

Funding

The gross fellowship stipend is GBP20,000. In addition to the stipend, Fellows from outside the UK will receive a reimbursement of travel expenses for a one-way restricted economy class ticket from their home base to London and single accommodation or a contribution of GBP800 per month towards a rental accommodation. Other benefits and facilities include: a research grant of up to GBP500, office space, access to AKU-ISMC’s library and the libraries of neighbouring academic institutions, and access to computer facilities.

Application Procedure

Candidates should complete the Fellowship Application Form (available at www.aku.edu/ismc) and submit it along with an updated list of publications and result of their IELTS test.
