European Microfinance Programme (Master complémentaire conjoint en microfinance)

Objectives

The European Microfinance Programme - EMP is directed at students who want to obtain a specialisation in microfinance and acquire expertise by working in a developing country.

It provides students with a multidisciplinary approach to the challenges facing the microfinance sector today.

It offers the combined expertise of academics and experts working in the field. Academics from several leading European universities and practitioners from non-governmental organisations have collaborated to launch this joint programme. EMP works in close connection with the Centre for European Research in Microfinance (CERMi), which offers optional seminars, conferences, and other research activities to the EMP students (www.cermi.eu).

Content

The programme lasts one year (60 ects).

It unfolds in 3 periods :

  • Mid September to January : Introduction to financial management, microfinance from conception to management, banking and microfinance, contracting and microfinance products, public policy in microfinance, microfinance and societies, introduction to rural development.
  • February to April : Topics in microfinance; case studies in microfinance. Assessment of microfinance, development and ethics
  • May to September : Students will complete a compulsory two-to-four-month field internship preferably at microfinance institutions in developing countries. The EMP does not provide any financial support for the expenses related to that internship. However, students have the possibility to look for grants and financial support from foundations, associations, etc...Last year, the EMP was able to help finance some of the CUD-EMP students' flight tickets, but the EMP cannot make any commitment for the year 2013-2014, as it will depend on the programme's financing capacities.

The course (all in English) take place four-to-six times per week from 6 pm to 9 pm. Sometimes, courses will take place on Saturday from 9.00 am to 12:00 am. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

PhD Studentship
Design and measurement methodologies of millimetre-wave smart antennas
University of Surrey

Applications are invited for a funded three-year PhD studentship
starting on 1 January 2013 to investigate the novel design and
measurement methodologies of millimetre-wave smart antennas.
Millimetre-wave smart antennas using, for example printed
reflectarray, are the key technology for satellite communications,
wireless local area networks and radars. At millimetre-wave bands they
offer multi-gigabit speeds to complement existing Wi-Fi capabilities
and enable new cutting-edge wireless applications. Main objectives of
this project include novel designs, implementations and measurement
techniques of millimetre-wave smart antennas. It will involve antenna
design, EM modelling and simulation, RF/millimetre-wave circuit
design, DSP algorithms, antenna measurement methodologies, FGPA
implementations, etc.

Candidates should hold a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in
Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Overseas students with
equivalent degrees will also be considered. The candidate will
preferably have a Master degree, and research backgrounds in one or
more of the following areas: antenna design, RF circuit design,
antenna measurement, and electromagnetics.

The award will be for a period of 3 years and include Home/Overseas
tuition fees plus a stipend (approx £13,590 p.a). Applications are
welcome from both the UK and internationally.

The student will be jointly supervised by Dr. Tian Hong Loh at The
National Physical Laboratory (NPL), and Dr. Steven Gao at University
of Surrey, UK. NPL is the UK's National Measurement Institute and is a
world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most
accurate measurement standards, science and technology. The novel
measurement techniques will be explored in the small and smart antenna
test range at NPL, which allows non-invasive antenna measurements. Dr.
Gao's Research Group at Surrey has extensive experience in the designs
of satellite communication antennas, smart antennas, phased arrays and
RF/millimeter-wave wireless systems.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr. Steven Gao, email:
s.gao@surrey.ac.uk.

Applications:

Applications should be sent to Dr. Steven Gao by post to Dr. Steven
Gao, Head of Antennas/RF/MM-Wave Group, Surrey Space Centre,
University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH, UK. Completed applications
should include a CV, a statement of research interests, the completed
application form, quoting the above studentship together with copies
of transcripts and certificate of qualifications. The Application Form
can be downloaded from:

Closing date: 21st October 2012

Info Beasiswa S3 di University of Manchester - PhD studentship in climate change research

|

4-Year PhD Scholarship
The University of Manchester -School of Environment and Development

Fully funded by the Leverhulme Trust Starting September 2012: Climate
change futures: how is the value of certified emissions reductions
(CERs) created?

We invite applications for a PhD studentship in the newly formed
Leverhulme Centre for the Study of Value with Professors Sarah
Bracking and Philip Woodhouse.

The studentship will be available from September 2012 for four years
and will cover tuition fees and a stipend to the value of over
£54,000, payable subject to eligibility criteria.

These studentships form part of a programme of work titled "Human,
non-human and environmental value systems: an impossible frontier?"
Globally, new markets and commodities are being created in a number of
key policy arenas that are putting prices, and thereby imputing a
particular value, to a number of previously un-priced (but not
necessarily unvalued) things: carbon, ecosystem services, commonly
held land, biodiversity, water and even human lives. This research
will explore how valuation technologies are designed in order to
understand the deficiencies and possibilities of value in political,
social and environmental terms. Its ultimate purpose is to suggest
better ways of doing value calculations that will improve the quality
of our economic and environmental future.

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was established at the United Nations
Climate Change Conference in Durban in 2011, with the World Bank named
as an interim Executive in order to provide finance for climate change
mitigation and adaptation in developing countries. Its institutional
and operating practices are in the process of establishment. It will
be central to the effort to create a better climate future, and yet
the calculative practices of how different types of emission reduction
projects are valued are not well understood, even within the national
institutions which accredit successful projects with tradable
certified emissions reductions (CERs). The extension of carbon markets
through the GCF will aggravate this pre-existing problem of valuation.
This project will examine the emerging functionality of the GCF
globally through South African case studies, with fieldwork to be
conducted in South Africa.

Applications are invited from those with both 'home' (UK/EU) tuition
fee status and 'overseas' fee status. For guidance, please follow this
link on how to determine tuition fee status. We must caution that the
value of the maintenance component will be less for overseas students
than for home students, due to a higher fee level, and a fixed package
overall. To discuss the financial terms of the award, contact
Monique.Brown@manchester.ac.uk

.

Applications should be made through our online application procedure
by Friday 24th August 2012, specifying "Climate change futures" as the
subject of study. You are NOT required to submit a research proposal.

In section 6 of the online application form, under 'research title'
please insert 'Climate change futures'. This will help us filter
applications.

Any enquiries relating specifically to the submission of applications
should be directed to: Laura.Dobson@manchester.ac.uk

Students will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by
7th September 2012.

If you have not been contacted by the 14th September please assume
that you have been unsuccessful. We expect that your studentship will
begin on 17th September, although some flexibility may be possible. We
would like to apologize in advance for the tight deadlines which
apply.
